In this workshop, Caroline will take you on a journey into the fascinating world of calligraphy. We begin with the Chancery style, developed in the Middle Ages to write quickly, legibly, and elegantly for correspondence. The Chancery letters are characterized by flowing movements, allowing you to write fast without losing readability. We start at the beginning, and in Workshop 2, we will continue developing a more complete alphabet.
*** a brief history … texts and books were written by hand by monks. the writing of those texts was very time-consuming, and the paper was very expensive. this ensured that only the rich could buy and read texts/books. the typeface was systematically modified in order to use the paper faster and/or more efficiently.
